Gita Rescued!

On 10th July, Gita*, a 14-15-year-old from Andhra Pradesh was found in prostitution in a brothel in  Hingoli, Maharashtra, approximately 300 kilometers from Nagpur. The Freedom Firm team reported this information to the local police. A rescue was planned for 13th July but before the team reached the area the brothel was shut down due to a tip-off.

Again, on 14th July, Freedom Firm staff approached the Deputy Superintendent of Police after finding Gita and the brothel keeper in the area. He immediately arranged a team of local police to conduct the rescue. Gita was rescued and placed in safe custody.  In her statement at the police station, she revealed that she was forced into prostitution by her sister who was also her brothel keeper.

Gita’s sister was arrested, and a criminal complaint filed against her under sections of the IPC (Indian Penal Code), ITPA ( Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act), and POSCO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act).
