16-year-old Lata was rescued in March 2023 from Nagpur's red light area, Ganga Jamuna. She was returned to her parents, who re-trafficked her, and our team rescued her again from a private brothel in Bundi, Rajasthan, in August 2023. Earlier this year, Lata testified in a special court and shared that her mother sold her for $17,900. Members of our rescue team also testified before the judge, and the last witness testified on July 23. The judge is reviewing the testimonies and evidence and will call the accused, Lata's mother, and the female brothel keeper.
We hope Lata will receive justice and that her mother and the brothel keeper will be fined and sentenced to prison. Every conviction serves as a warning to other mothers, fathers, pimps, brothel keepers, and traffickers who exploit these young women: they will be caught, fined, and severely punished.
