In 2023, while we were investigating Ganga Jamuna–Nagpur’s red light area, we learned about a minor victim, Purvi, who was being sexually exploited in the area. The brothel keeper kept moving Purvi to different locations, so we were unable to rescue her. At some point, Purvi was moved to Mumbai, and we were no longer able to track her.

Last year, we received intel that Purvi was back in Nagpur. We tried to find her new location but were unable to get any solid leads.

In February 2025, we finally tracked Purvi’s location. She was being sexually exploited at a brothel in Ganga Jamuna. As soon as we gathered sufficient evidence, we spoke with the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of Nagpur and requested her to initiate a raid to rescue Purvi.

On February 13, the police and our team prepared to initiate a raid. However, due to some stumbling blocks, the raid was delayed, and the police left the location. We planned to carry out the raid with the police the following day.

On February 14, we developed a rescue plan with the police. We arrived in Ganga Jamuna at 10 a.m., and at 10:31 a.m., we received confirmation that Purvi was at the brothel, so the police and our team raided the brothel. We found and rescued Purvi right away. She was with her 18-month-old son and her mother. We quickly discovered that Purvi’s mother was the brothel keeper and pimp. We rescued Purvi, and the police detained her mother. After the police completed their initial reports, we proceeded to the police station with Purvi and the accused.

At the police station, the DCP called us on the phone and asked us to share Purvi’s shelter home rehabilitation plans. We briefly shared that our rehabilitation program includes life skills sessions, vocational training, workshops, and follow-up visits with survivors after they leave the shelter homes.

The police completed filing the First Information Report (FIR). They included Sections 3, 4, 5, and 6 of the PITA Act (The Immoral Traffic Prevention Act) and Section 143 under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita BNS Act 2023. (These acts strengthen a case against a trafficking victim’s offender.)

Purvi was placed in a shelter home. Her mother remains in police custody.
